Criteria for Participation
Commitment to Progressive Judaism either as a Temple member, participant in Netzer or other
affiliated organization adhering to the principles of Progressive Judaism.
Willingness to make a commitment to an extended period of study which will include Jewish
learning, leadership development and Zionist education.
Understanding that upon completion of the program there is an expectation to take on the
responsibility of a leadership role in the community and/or the Movement at large for a minimum
of five years.
Completion of an application stating what the participant anticipates from the programme and why
he/she wishes to participate.

Curriculum
The Leadership Institute-Zera’im has a structured curriculum involving participation in study sessions
lasting from 6-8 months.  The main components are:  Jewish study, skill development, mentoring and
reflection, and Board Management.
Jewish study—participants engage in study of Jewish texts and sources relating to leadership.
This includes basic Jewish literacy, the Jewish calendar and modern Jewish history.  As the
participants become more familiar with the texts, they will be expected to take on responsibility
for leading discussions and preparing materials for the group.
Skill Development—this includes an overview of the basic techniques for effective leadership,
such as Characteristics of a successful leader, Active Listening, Providing feedback, Analysing
one’s own leadership style, Observing various communal leaders, Organizing and facilitating
meetings, Motivating, and much more
Mentoring and Reflection—each participant has a personal mentor to assist them with
processing what they are experiencing and learning - Participants engage in personal reflection
about their experiences.
Board Management— The role of a Board in relation to an institution—governance, policy,
oversight, fiscal management, Lay-staff relations, Use of committees and task forces, Planning,
Communication

Ongoing Seminars, Sundays, 9:30-12:30, via telephone, video-conference or e-conference
March 18-20 Retreat for all particpants, April 10, May 15, June 5, July 3, August 21

Mentors:
Individuals who have held leadership roles in the past in congregations, day schools,
communal organisations
Tuition
$250 per participant
