son Sam, who is only 5 but nevertheless quite astute, asked if Grandma was sick in the same way
that Grandpa Peter had been, and so a discussion ensued. We were not sure what had sunk in,
but that evening as she was tucked into bed my daughter Annabelle told me very matter-of-
factly:
Daddy - I have something sad to tell you. Grandma Ann is very sick
First the Doctor says you are allowed to go to hospital, then the angels take
you to heaven, then Grandma can be best friends with Grandpa Peter again
Not a bad explanation for a 3 year old. In fact, it reminded me a little of how Mum might have
said it step-by-step, to the point, and quickly finding the good in the situation.

Ann Elias leaves a wide circle of friends and a strong, proud and grateful family. How will we
remember her life ?
It was an honest, hard working and widely respected life.
It was a life lived to the full serving others and recognising and valuing them as individuals.
It was a happy and rewarding life.
She led by example.
And we will all miss her challenging, well-informed conversations and sage advice.
Ann Elias was indeed a virtuous woman. She was a good and faithful servant. And now we let
her depart in peace.
