A similar concept was followed when I was a child, known in Yiddish as to schlock kappores.
Before Yom Kippur my grandfather would buy a live chicken and on the day before the Holiday
everyone in the family would swing the chicken above their head whilst saying a prayer transferring
their sins to the bird, which afterwards would be killed and given to the poor. I dont remember
whether at the time I thought the ceremony fun or whether I was terrified as I helped my
grandfather swing the hapless bird round my head. When my grandfather became too ill to cope
with live birds the ceremony was carried out using a handful of coins which were later given to
charity.
A still further example of a ceremony to cast out sins is that of Tashlich which is carried out in the
afternoon of the first day of Rosh ha-Shanah. The penitents walk to a river or the sea and recite
penitential prayers, the essence of which is the hope that their sins will be cast into a place where
they shall no more be remembered nor visited nor ever come to mind.

KOSHER KORNER
Did you know that Coles at Sandy Bay in Hobart has an ever-growing KOSHER SECTION ? The new manager,
Rob Sanders, is very sympathetic and has improved/enlarged on what was started by the previous manager, David
Dillon. We are hopeful of having kosher margarine, small goods and (whisper, whisper!!) kosher MEAT very soon
which will all augment and enhance the kosher range available for purchase here in Hobart/Tasmania. So,
holidaymakers and those on self-catering holidays wont have to schlepp kosher products/foods here
everything
may be bought locally.
I also had a call from the Delicatessen in Elizabeth Mall, central Hobart
kosher [sweet] biscuits, along with
matzo, may be purchased there now.
