WORLD
ENVIRONMENT DAY
5 JUNE 2004
BACKGROUND
World Environment Day is celebrated around the world
as the day when people take stock of their environment.
The date recognizes the commencement of the United
Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which
was held in Stockholm in 1972.
The general aims adopted for World Environment Day
are:
to raise community awareness of environmental
issues and their importance;
to encourage the community to act responsibly
towards the environment; and
to involve the community in actions which show
concern for the environment, both
for World Environment Day and in the future.
The World Environment Day theme selected for 2004 is
Wanted!   Seas and Oceans
Dead or Alive?
The theme asks that we make a choice as to how we
want to treat the Earth’s seas and oceans. It also calls on
each and every one of us to act.   Do we want to keep
seas and oceans healthy and alive, or polluted and dead?
World Environment Day is an opportunity for
Australians to show their commitment to the
environment at a personal level:   at home, at school, at
work and in their day to day life.
There are many personal actions each one of us can take
every day.   They are simple, free and quick.  Yet overall
they will make an effective and positive contribution to
the environment.
