ECAJ President’s article
Dear Friends
The visit to Australia of President and Mrs.
Katsav was an unqualified success both at
the political and communal levels.   Thanks
to all who contributed particularly the team at
ZFA, NSWJBD and the SZCs.   It is planned
to follow up on many of the initiatives and
issues raised during the visit and so
maintain the momentum.
Attached are photos of a magnificent shofar
presented by the President and which I
would like you all to see.   I understand a
similar momento was presented to Ron
Weiser.
For those who were able to meet and greet
the President, I hope you found it as moving
and rewarding as did Ruth and I.   My
personal thanks to those who were able to
make it to Canberra for our meeting and the
reception at the Embassy.
Despite the heat, time constraints and a
large agenda I believe it all went very well
and we are indebted to Bill Arnold and his
ACT team for making us so welcome.
Regards
Grahame Leonard
Alice Jacobs  … Searching for a school friend … can you help?
I went to Ulverstone High School during the early 1960s.   My best friends were two
Penguin girls, one a Jewish girl named Alice Jacobs.   Her dad was Charlie Jacobs,
sister Betty (Elizabeth?) and brother, I think, Simon.   Shamefully, I cannot remember her
mother's name despite the hospitality she showed me on overnight/weekend sleepovers.
Alice was one of the highest academic achievers at the school.   At the end of year 10,
Alice moved to Burnie High School to matriculate whereas I (from Abbotsham) travelled
to Devonport.   Eventually the family moved to Burnie.   I relocated to Hobart teacher's
College and Alice to University.   I believe she resided at Jane Franklin residential college
in Davey St, but my memory tends to wobble a bit these days!    We lost touch with
divergent lifestyles, but picked up again in Melbourne when Alice was my bridesmaid
/matron of honour at a civil ceremony, together with another friend, Bill Livingston, also
an ex Penguin/Ulverstone High School person.
I believe Alice moved again and we lost touch.   I heard a rumour at one stage that she
was teaching at the Lycee in Paris!!!???   I have been trying to find her off and on for the
last couple of years as she is one of the people on my passage whom I cared greatly
about, but Jewish organisations in NW Tassie are very thin on the ground, and my
internet searches have not been very helpful, particularly not knowing Alice's or Betty's
married names.   I found your website and hoped that you could possibly assist me, if not
with a link, at least with some pointers.
