160th Anniversary
4 July 2005
We received the following congratulatory letter from the Union for Progressive Judaism
Let them build me a sanctuary so that I may dwell among them. (Exodus 25:8)
How extraordinary that the Hobart Hebrew Congregation is marking its 160th anniversary. The
congregation has been a beacon of light for the Jews of this region as the longest continuously
functioning synagogue in the Southern Hemisphere. Truly, God has dwelt among you for all
this time.
On behalf of the Executive Committee and constituents of the Union for Progressive Judaism,
we would like to wish you, your Board of Management, and all members of the Hobart Hebrew
Congregation our heartiest mazel tov on this occasion. We wish you continued success in all
you do as you celebrate this milestone in the life of the congregation.
Bshalom (Phyllis Dorey President) (Janice Alper Executive Director)
From Temple Beth Israel
Rabbi Fred Morgan, the Board of Management and the membes
and friends of Temple Beth Israel join me in wishing you, your Board and your congregation a
hearty mazel tov on the occasion of your synagogues 160th anniversary this coming Monday.
How proud you all must be! And rightfully so!
Hobart Hebrew Congregation is a great example to us all. Not only in that so few people can
build and maintain a vibrant Jewish community, but that you can also do so with such grace,
dignity, sense of fun and, above all, together with your Orthodox neighbours. Hol haKavod!
Our best wishes are extended to you all. May the work of your hands go from strength to
strength for at least another 160 years!
Bshalom (Kathy Kaplan President)
Jewish Night of Humour
O what a night! Thank you, Len Freedman for making us laugh! There's nothing like
laughter, is there? Over 30 of us braved wind and rain (what else in early September?) and
we had a wonderful evening ...
Len's excellent script was well received by an appreciative audience and afterwards he gave a
tour of the shul to the audience.
It was all in a good cause - raising funds for the much-needed refurbishment of the shul's loo
(a joke in itself some might say)... So, if you missed the evening, perhaps you'll send us a
donation to show your appreciation for all Len's hard work (in preparing the evening's jokes
AND when he leads our services, etc.)
Len was presented with two gifts in appreciation and it would be remiss of me if I didn't tell you
that he has re-donated one of these. The re-donated gift ... a toilet brush and holder - what
else?!
