ECAJ expresses sympathy for the people of London
We were all horrified at the news on Thursday, 7 July of the London bombings;  I take this
opportunity to print the ECAJ's expression of sympathy of 8 July 2005:
The Executive Council of Australian Jewry, the representative organisation of Australia's Jewish
community, has today expressed its abhorrence at the actions of the terrorists who have attacked
London's civilian population.
"We see yesterday's attack in London as part of the broader campaign by terrorists to undermine
the freedoms and way of life we enjoy" said Council President, Grahame Leonard.
The ECAJ works closely with the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and is the Australian affiliate of
the Commonwealth Jewish Council, based in London.
"To our friends and colleagues in the United Kingdom, know that you have our sympathy at this
terrible time.  To the families of the many people murdered and the hundreds who were injured, we
express to you our deepest sorrow" Mr Leonard continued.
"The free world is fighting a war in which fundamentalist ideology is seeking to destry democracy
and human rights by terrorism and fear" Mr Leonard said.
"It is horrifying and repulsive that innocent people going about their daily lives should be targeted in
this way.  We urge people to find the resolve to continue living their lives without being intimidated
by these outrageous acts." Mr Leonard concluded
Hurricane Katrina ... and what we had to say
It's an unfortunate (but mostly true) fact that many of the World's disasters today fall in "Third
World" countries.  So it does seem incomprehensible that Hurricane Katrina has brought so much
damage and misery to the USA ... I know that they've had hurricanes and tornadoes aplenty but
this one was just so much BIGGER.
We sent the following words of comfort to our fellow Jews in the affected areas:
"The Jewish community in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia has viewed with horror the enormity of
destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrine over the past few days.  We are all hoping that our
Jewish friends have found refuge and are safe and well.  We are thinking of you all at this terrible
time.
Shalom    Caroline Heard   President   Hobart Hebrew Congregation
(Editor's Note:  Since writing this the world has seen the even more recent earthquake in Asia and
our sympathy also extends to the many thousands of people in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan
who have been affected by this disaster.
