PRESIDENT’S PROLEGOMENA … (yes, I see you all dashing to check
this word in your dictionaries! … it’s so much better than ‘preface’ and/or
‘prologue’ … although whether the rest of “Chaverim” can truly be termed a
literary, critical or discursive work is for you to determine!)
Firstly, I should like to congratulate this congregation on the occasion of its
160th Anniversary … quite an achievement! I am very proud to head this
congregation at such a time but am mindful of all who have gone before
me, and who have “kept the flame alive” in sometimes very difficult
circumstances.
Since the last (Pesach) edition of “Chaverim” such a lot has been
happening here in our community. In May we held our Commemorative
Service which was a very moving occasion, led by Len Freedman and
attended by HE The Governor of Tasmania and other State and local
dignatories, as well as many members of our congregation.
Our usual activities have continued – such as Study Sessions, Pot Luck
events, etc. – and I do sincerely thank everyone concerned for acting as
hosts, organisers, etc.
National Council of Jewish Women is now “firmly in the groove” with
regular meetings being held. Our first for quite a while was held at the
end of June, when Dr Avner Misrachi spoke on “Influenza” and many of its
implications. The next meeting was in mid-August when Russell Garrick
spoke on … wait for it! – CHOCOLATE ! And by the time you read this, a
speaker from COTA will have talked to us about "Seniors: quality use of
medicines" which is not the dry old subject you might imagine!
Opportunities arise, sometimes at short notice, or “between newsletters”,
for talks to be arranged with visitors to Hobart. Many are highly educated
in Jewish matters and are very willing to give us these talks. We are very
fortunate and grateful for these opportunities.
Therefore, we want to start a quick notice system, to inform members
about these opportunities. We do ask ALL members to supply us with
their email addresses. Please send this information to the shule email
address – shule@hobart.org
Once again, I do thank our resident computer-guru, Roz Chapman, who
has put this edition of “Chaverim” together for us all … THANK YOU, Roz !
