MORE  ABOUT  OUR  160th  ANNIVERSARY …
It’s a mystery to me, but I expect there was a good explanation for it, why our founding fathers
decided to hold the Consecration of the Hobart Synagogue in deepest, darkest winter.   Hobart in
early July can be (and was) pretty chilly.   As lighting was by candle, I’ll bet there were a lot of candles
used that weekend!
With winter in mind, and to encourage as many people as possible to participate, it has been decided
to hold our 160th Anniversary Celebrations over the weekend of 25-27 November 2005.
Spring and summer in Hobart are an absolute delight and we are hopeful that interstate visitors will
join with us to celebrate a remarkable milestone in our history.   The President of the ECAJ (and his
wife);  The President of NCJW (and her husband); Rabbi and Mrs Levi have already booked their
flights so they can join us in our celebrations.
Friday 25 November - we start our weekend with a Reception at Government House, hosted by HE
the Governor of Tasmania (The Hon William Cox) and Mrs Cox.   This will be followed by a
Progressive Friday night service in Shul lead by Rabbi John Levi.
Saturday 26 November - Shabbat morning Progressive service will be lead by Rabbi Levi and in the
afternoon there will be an NCJW afternoon tea … our guest speaker will be the National President of
NCJW, Mrs Robyn Lenn OAM.
On Sunday 27 November – we will have a superb concert at the Shul arranged by Cantor Joseph
Toltz from Temple Emanuel in Sydney and featuring his renowned choristers and local musicians - full
details on this will follow as soon as possible - watch your letterbox for this one!.
Mark this weekend in your diaries right now!
ABC “ENCOUNTERS” PROGRAMME
At our August Friday night we were visited by an ABC Producer.   Her name was Lyn Gallacher.   She
came to shul and afterwards joined us at our Pot Luck event.   She wanted to talk with any and all of
us … and her conversations were taped   She is producing a radio program, which will go to air in
November 2005.
She said: “What I’d like to do is make a 50 minute radio feature about the life and times of the Hobart
Synagogue.   The program series is called Encounter.   It goes to air on ABC Radio National on
Sunday mornings and we could schedule this episode to coincide with your 160th celebrations in
November (although the program would be made earlier).    ….
The idea of the program would be to begin with the historical significance of the synagogue and then
reflect on how this history has contributed to the “against all odds” survival of the congregation.   It
would be good to capture a sense of what it means to be Jewish in Tasmania, in whatever diversity.
Planned elements of the program will be:
Individual life stories – how people came to be part of the community?  What does it mean for them?
The building itself – reflecting on the history in/on the walls
Contemporary problems – how is Hobart’s growing population affecting the community?
The 160th Celebrations – what are the plans?
The future – how could a sense of historical significance continue to be useful to the community?
I hope you enjoyed meeting with Lyn and talking with her about your experiences.   The programme
will go to air on SUNDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2005
