AROUND OUR COMMUNITY
Recent visitors to Hobart have been:
Judy Campbell, Music Director at North Shore Temple Emanuel in Sydney. Time was against us
at our July Friday night Progressive Service in shul but those who were present heard Judy sing
(what a sensational voice!) and then took part in a very short Shabbat sing-a-long. Thank You,
Judy! We have some new tunes/melodies
please see my notice regarding getting a Choir up
and running, with regular practice sessions!
Dr Norma Pratt, from California was an unexpected visitor. Unfortunately, we didnt have
enough time to organise a time-slot for Norma to give us a talk on Yiddish she teaches this and
associated Jewish studies back in the US but hopefully Norma will be able to return to Hobart in
the not-too-distant future
keep your fingers crossed!
Professor Adrian Praetzellis (and his wife, Mary) also visited us from California. Adrian is a
Professor of Anthropology and we were able to arrange for Adrian to give us a talk: 18 of us
gathered at Caroline Heards home on a cold, wintery July evening and were enthralled to learn
about The Medieval Jews of York. Adrian illustrated his talk with slides from his lap-top
computer. Thank you, Adrian for taking time out of your holiday schedule to give us such a
fascinating talk, and a thank you to Will Howard for lending us the data projector.
Im sure you will have noticed the fabulous new carpet in shul and we are truly indebted to
Stephen Graetzer for the many, many long hours spent organising and supervising the whole job.
Well done and Thank You, Stephen !
Len and Renée have now welcomed their daughter, Sara, her husband Paul and their young
sons Nathan and Seb who have come to live in Hobart. Welcome!
Sol Beer, after recent major surgery, is home and on the road to recovery. If you wish to phone
Sol and Miriam, it is suggested that the best time to ring is around midday.
Sandy reports that the usual winter ills and chills hit our community but everyone seems to have
recovered
Our Study Sessions are a continuing success, thanks to Tony OBrien and Will Howards
enthusiasm and Rabbi Fred Morgans continued input. Thank you all !
Many thanks, once again, to the Pot Luck venue hosts, and to Debbie and Russell Garrick who
make their home available so willingly and so often, for Board Meetings, Study Sessions, NCJW
events, etc. etc.
Caroline Heard has farewelled her son, David, who has moved to Melbourne. Caroline expects
to be visiting Melbourne more often in the future as both David, and his UK cousin, now live
there.
Thank you to all those who have led services over the past months, and continue to do - we are
indebted to you all.
We need a new pot-luck dinner co-ordinator,
someone who can carry on the great work
done by Carol Samuelson. Please contact
shule@hobart.org if you can help.
