NEWS FROM THE BOARD
Some of the topics discussed at recent Board meetings were:
Bnai Brith Australia have advised that a Dreyfus Exhibition is being shown in Australia and every
effort is being made to have it come to Hobart.
The carpet was sprayed against insect pests eg: silverfish - before and after it was laid. After the
laying was completed, a gas was released into the shul to kill any remaining insects.
The cost of food, drink, hall hire etc for the Seder came to a total of cost of $492.25. The takings
from the night were $490.00 so we broke even!
The first print run of A Few From Afar has sold out and one thousand copies (incorporating some
very minor amendments) have been reprinted.
Two donations from National Council of Jewish Women Australia have been received - $500 from the
NSW branch and $1,000 from the Victorian branch the money is to be used for the upgrade of the
Boardroom which has almost been completed.
An anonymous donation of $2,500 has been given with the stipulation that it be spent on the
cemetery. It was agreed that this money be used towards organising a more appropriate layout for
the relocated graves to prevent them being walked over as they are now and to make better use of
the available space.
The celebration of the Hobart synagogues 160th year will be held on the weekend 25-27 November.
A musical concert has been organized by Cantor JosephToltz from Sydney to be held on the
afternoon of Sunday 27 November.
A few copies of the Australian Jewish News may be available later this year for a trial period. We
hope these will be available at the Sandy Bay Newsagency in the near future.
The memorial plaque in the shul for Peter Elias will be replaced by one with both Peter and Anns
names on it. The wording for the revised plaque has been provided by their sons.
Hobart Visit by Speaker of the
Knesset 2/3 December
We have been advised by the Israeli ambassador in
Canberra, Mr Nati Tamir that we are to be honoured
with a visit (2/3 December) by Mr Reuben Rivlin MK,
the Speaker of the Knesset. A special Progressive
Friday night service will be held on the 2nd of
December, in the Hobart Shul to mark the event. Mr
Rivlin will be accompanied by Mrs Rivlin. Mr and Mrs
Tamir will also attend the service.
Please mark this date in your diary as we would like to
see the Shul full to overflowing!
