At the board meeting on 9 March, Caroline resigned as president due to
her impending move to Melbourne. Caroline's contribution to the
community over the past 11 years has been immense and she will be
missed. On behalf of the shul, ten trees have been planted in Israel in
Caroline's honour. I am sure everybody will join with me in wishing
Caroline well for the future in her new home.
I have been appointed by the Board and agreed to take on the presidency
until the next AGM.
Having been thrust into the presidency unexpectedly, it was wonderful to
have so many members rally around me and offer assistance. Thank you
all for your support.
The issue of membership involvement is common in many congregations
throughout Australia. In Tasmania we probably have a higher percentage
of membership involvement than many other congregations. The problem
is we are a very small community. It is difficult at times to get enough
people to help with congregation matters. And when members do assist
with services and events, it can be very disheartening for those who have
put in a lot of effort and time only find a hand full of members attend.
Services are a particular issue. The services are the main activity of the
community. It is disappointing for those taking the service if only a few
people attend. And at present we need more volunteers to assist with the
taking of the Progressive services. I wonder if the reluctance of some
members to assist, is related to the poor level of attendance.
Is part of the problem that the congregation does not provide what
members want? If you feel you are not getting out of your membership
what you want, why don’t you contact me, or other Board member and
discuss. We welcome your feedback and suggestions.
While it may seem a long time away, we are already planning for the high
holidays. Janice Alper, Executive Director Union for Progressive Judaism
has kindly agreed to come to Tasmania and take the services. Pam
Marks-John has agreed to assist with the singing. Rosh Hashanah is on
Saturday 23 September and Yom Kippur on Monday 2 October. I trust
members will show their support by attending the services.

KOSHER WINE
As kosher wine is not available in Tasmania, I have been approached by a number of members
about how they can obtain it. If there is sufficient interest, the Board will organise a bulk joint
purchase from interstate. Interested members please contact me by email (shule@hobart.org) or
phone (6229 2687).
