FROM THE BOARDROOM
NEWS FROM THE BOARD
Members determined the following ruling for burial of non-Jewish family
members:
If the non-Jewish spouse, partner, parent or child of a Jewish person dies, it
would be acceptable for their cremated remains to be interred in the niche wall.
If the Jewish relative has a genuine expectation of staying in Hobart until they
die, then the remains of the non-Jewish relative can be interred in the niche wall,
even before the death of that persons Jewish relative.
Some of our Torahs are not kosher as they have mistakes and some are falling
apart. As mistakes are found, they will be identified. The repairs will be carried
out in Melbourne and as Torahs cannot be posted they will have to be taken by
people when they travel interstate.
The Board is continuing to investigate the use of acrylic or polycarbonate
sheeting as protection for the front windows of the shul.
The Board room has been refurbished with money donated by the National
Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) from Melbourne ($1000) and Sydney ($500).
The money has been used to purchase new curtains, a bar fridge and an urn.
The pictures have also been re-hung and labelled and the room given a general
face lift.
Sandy Graetzer who is already a member of the Historical Society has agreed to
be the Hobart Hebrew Congregations (HHC) representative on the Society.
The synagogue will have to get a Certificate of Occupancy as decreed by the
Hobart City Council. This will involve paying for a building surveyor to inspect
the building as this is a requirement of certification.
The Board extends a public thank you to Roz and Graham Chapman for their
excellent work in maintaining the HHCs website.
The Kiddush cup presented to Len Freedman on his retirement as lay reader has
been engraved with appropriate wording and includes the English and Hebrew
dates.
Thank you to David Clark who with advice of Peter Spratt from the Heritage
Council fixed the moisture problem at the back of the shul and it is now ready for
painting.
A map of the Jewish cemetery shows that there are empty plots between the
existing headstones. Members agreed that these gaps should be filled before
starting new graves in other areas of the cemetery.
It was agreed to an additional Friday night service to be taken by Bill Stuart,
which will be mainly in English.
