This is the Passover edition of the newsletter and first of the year.
The Board has decided that in future only four newsletters a year
will be produced, supplemented with the regular mail outs which
include the calendar. It is also the first newsletter by Michal
Golebowicz our new editor.
This year has got off to a successful start with a visit to Hobart by
the Israeli ambassador (photo on page 12.) We had the successful
Purim party at the home of Len and Rene Freedman. After a years
break we are again going to hold a communal Seder this Passover.
We are very fortunate to be having Rabbi John Levi coming to
Hobart especially to take the Seder. Information about the Seder
was sent in the January mail out. If you are intending to come and
have not yet let us know there is still time but hurry.
The monthly study group will continue this year. Also this year we
are introducing a book club which will be coordinated by Tom
Schlesinger.
We are honoured this year to be hosting the Union for Progressive
Judaism (UPJ) regional conference in October. Patsy Zadik has
agreed, with help from Susan Steenbergen and Debbie Brown to
co-ordinate the conference. This is a major task and I hope all
members will offer assistance to make the conference a success.
On 15 April we will hold the annual open day as part of the National
Trust Tasmanian Heritage Festival. The open day is an important
public relations event. We regularly get large numbers of visitors
and it is our opportunity to explain Judaism and build bridges with
the greater Tasmanian community.
Explaining Judaism is something that Tom Schlesinger and Len
Freedman regularly do for groups of school children. Michal
Golebowicz is developing a pamphlet to explain Judaism to non-
Jewish school children. We hope to obtain a funding grant to print
the pamphlet and allow wide distribution among Tasmanian school
children.
Through a generous donation from Laurence Herst, a memorial to
those reburied from the Harrington Street cemetery, at the
Cornelian Bay cemetery, has been built. It is a wonderful tribute to
those pioneering Jews who first settled in Tasmania and founded
our community. It includes the headstone of Bernard Walford who
both organised the Harrington Street cemetery and was the first
person buried there. I encourage you to go and see this excellent
renovation.
