FROM THE BOARDROOM
NEWS FROM THE BOARD
A Progressive Services sub-committee has been formed to organize Progressive services.   The
committee comprises Stephen Graetzer, Tom Schlesinger and Len Freedman.
In July 2006 the Board sponsored the attendance of Pam Marks-John at a practical workshop on
music leadership at Beth Shalom in Adelaide.
Last year the Union of Progressive Jewry (UPJ) appointed Rabbi John Levi as the consulting
Progressive Rabbi for Hobart.   In January 2007 the Board was advised by UPJ that John Levi has
been transferred to assist the Gold Coast community and Rabbi Aviva Kipen has now been
allocated as Hobart’s consulting rabbi.   It is anticipated that she will visit Hobart three times per
year.
The mandatory State Government requirement for a Certificate of Occupancy “essential health and
safety feature measures” for the shul building has been completed and in accordance with the
regulation, the certificate is on display in the shul.
On September 14 2007 the first Board meeting was held with the newly elected Board members.
A three-year security maintenance agreement commencing in April 2007 has been entered into with
Chubb.
A notebook computer has been purchased for the congregation.   It will be used to store all
synagogue related information.   It will also be used by the secretary to take minutes and provide a
back-up for the Chubb security software.
Michal Golebowicz has taken on the job of coordinating Chaverim.
Preparatory work has commenced prior to the installation of laminated security glass to the shul's
front windows.   The preparation includes cleaning the glass, replacing putty, repair of broken panes
and a painter is to be selected to paint the window frames.

PESACH SECOND NIGHT SEDER
In ancient times the calendar was a tricky business.   For one thing it was obvious there was a
time lag between Babylon and Jerusalem.   There was another time change between Alexandria,
with its huge Jewish population and the Land of Israel.   Because of this a second day Yom Tov
was inaugurated to solve the problem.   I also suspect that Seder Night was so pleasant it seemed
a good idea to repeat it.   For many families this device solves the problem of the "in-laws" and
you can keep two families happy.
Be all that as it may Hobart is going to celebrate its communal seder on the second night of Seder
"under rabbinical supervision".   We will use our own Australian Family haggadah.   There will be
traditional songs and prayers and we can relax because we "came out of Egypt" on the first night
of the Festival.
I hope you can be with us!
