COUNSELLING FOR POST WWII
MIGRANTS
The Federal Government has recognised that many
immediate post Second World War migrants are still suffering
trauma from the war. It is therefore funding a counselling
service to assist those migrants who need help. If you are
interested in using the service either contact Daniel Albert or

A PRACTICAL WORKSHOP ON MUSIC LEADERSHIP
This is an extract from a letter written by Pam Marks-John to the Hobart Hebrew Congregation (HHC)
Board after attending the weekend practical workshop on music leadership led by Cantor Joseph Toltz
which took place at Beth Shalom in Adelaide on June 9-12 last year.
The cost was partly subsidised by the UPJ and the congregation paid the balance. Participants were
billeted in the homes of congregation members. Pam thanked all those connected in various ways to
make the seminar so successful and in particular thanked the HHC Board of Management for
sponsoring her participation at this event.
On Shabbat after the morning service the seminar commenced with a discussion on choral policy in
shule, the introduction of 'new music' to congregations, and what worked (chorally) and what does not,
within the individual congregation experience. We also worked on new settings, much of which were
composed and arranged by Joseph Toltz.
On the Sunday morning the seminar focussed on prayer leadership commencing with a morning
service led by by Cantor Toltz. The main focus of this day's study was aimed at prayer leadership, as
well as working through a book of music generously provided by Cantor Toltz.
Pam summed up the weekend as follows "Throughout this weekend seminar, it became obvious to me
that the Hobart Hebrew Congregation should establish a choir which meets and practices Jewish
music for various occasions, working together on a regular basis. In time we will expand our
repertoire, which will also help the congregation to do likewise, thus gaining more enjoyment from
participation in our services."
