Phineas Moss

Congregation secretary. He published the first Jewish calendar for Australia in Hebrew and English in 1853. There is a painting of Moss that is on display in the synagogue's upstairs vestry room. A free-settler who came to Van Diemen's Land in 1835 and worked as a public servant, first in Bothwell and then later in Hobart Town. Moss was a popular science lecturer.
