MINUTES OF MEETING, held Tuesday, 19th June, 1951 at the home of Mr. H. Jacob, 21 Maning Av. Sandy Bay

PRESENT
Messrs. Epstein, Abrams, Chase, H. Jacob, Newman, Seidel, Mrs. Fixel and on special request Mr. Ruben

VISIT OF Lodge members to Synagogue
An incident which has occurred lately was discussed at great length: Mr. Coronel showed a group of members of the Hobart Lodge of Research over the Synagogue on the afternoon of Saturday, 26th May.  The Board of Management knew about the forthcoming visit though no official permission had been asked for, and Mr. Coronel had stated explicitely that no Service would be asked for at this occasion.  Inspite of this undertaking however a Service was held, which was called a "Model Service" to acquaint members of the lodge with proceedings in a Synagogue.  A letter dated 18th June, written by Mr. Coronel was tabled to explain why Mr. Coronel acted contrary to his promise.

Report by Mr. Rubens
Mr. Ruben was asked to report to the Board on this happening and stated that on coming to the Synagogue on Saturday afternoon, Mr. Coronel had given him the outline of a Service.  As the Lodge Members were already there and were under the impression that they were to witness a Service, Mr. Ruben felt that under the circumstances he could not do otherwise than to comply with their expectations, though the President had given strict orders against the holding of a Service.  During this Model Service some psalms, taken from the Singer Prayerbook were sung the 10 Commandments read out and explanations given about the Thora and various Books of Worship.

Attitude of Board
It is to put on record however that not the fact that Masons were shown over the Synagogue was deplored, quite on the Contrary the Board would have gladly invited them to attend a regular Service, but the strongest objections were taken towards the disregard of the Board's explicit instructions, and towards the holding of a Service in the absence of any member of the Board.  It was made quite clear to Mr. Ruben that this was the last disregard of the explicit instructions the Board was prepared to take

RESOLUTIONS

The following 2 Resolutions were passed:
1) The President & Board of Management condem the happening and severely reprimand Mr. Ruben and similar occurrences must be avoided in future.  Moved by Mr. Chase, seconded by Mr. Jacob.

2) Matters of general interest should not be handled by a few Board members only, but should be brought before a Board meeting.  Moved by Mr. Chase, seconded by Mr. Jacob.

CHIEF RABBI's VISIT
Circular resolved from the Chief Rabbi's Office was tabled and it is expected that the Chief Rabbi will be in Hobart in April, 1952.

Mr. ABRAMS
Mr. Abrams tendered his resignation as he was about to move with his family to Launceston.  His resignation was accepted with regret and it is to put on record that ever since his arrival in Hobart some 11 years ago Mr. Abrams has been a most interested and active member of the Congregation, and the Board wishes him and his family all the best for the future.

ECAJ
Executive Council Meeting is to be held shortly and it is to be left to Mr. Epstein to arrange for representation of the Hobart community.

Thora from India
Mr. Jacob reported that during his recent Visit to India he had been instructed to the Lady Rachel Ezra of Calcutta who was very interested in the Hobart Community and she promised to see to it that a Thora would be sent to the Hobart Congregation.  This Thora has now arrived in Hobart and it was decided to write a letter of thanks to Lady Ezra, and to held a special Consecration Service to which the Friends of the Hobart Hebrew Congregation on the Mainland will also be invited.

The opportunity is taken to record a special Vote of Thanks for Lady Ezra for her generosity, and her name is to be inscribed in Golden Letters in the Synagogue.

A photo of the Synagogue has in the meantime been forwarded to Lady Ezra.

The meeting then closed.

Signed as True Record.
