MR. M. WARSE
The President, Mr. V.A. Coronel who held the chair gave a report in matters Mr. Warschauer: -  On the 24th April, 1946 a telegram was received reading as follows:
" HEARD THROUGH RABBI SCHENK YOU SEEKING
" MINISTER AND MOST INTERESTED PLEASE ADVISE
" FULL PARTICULAR ... MAX WARSCHAUER
                      CARE HICHEN, SHANGHAI

This telegram was brought before the meeting of the Committee, held on the 14th May, 1946, and the meeting decided to deal with this telegram in the usual manners, by replying to Mr. Warschauer and requesting him to furnish further details, as well as by approaching Rabbi Schenk.  (See also minutes of meeting 14th May, 1946)

Consequently a letter was written to Rabbi Schenk for particulars about Mr. W. and extract of his reply reads as follows: "My former Secretary, Miss Shirley Price, who is now sec. to UNRRA in Shanghai, wrote and cabled me about Max Warschauer, whose services she has been attending regularly.  She writes that he has one of the most beautiful voices of any cantor- well trained and of great musical knowledge.  HE has been conducting services for the American and allied troops and still does"... (See Rabbi Schenk Letter dated 20th May, 1946)

Several days later Rabbi Schenk forwarded photograph and Curriculum Vitae of Mr. Warschauer, which has originally been received by Rabbi Sanger of Temple Beth Israel in Melbourne.  Curriculum Vitae is attached herewith.

Our letter of 16th May, addressed to Mr. Warschauer requested full details as to qualifications etc. It stated further that "once we have this information we will have to communicate with the larger communities in Australia to see whether an engagement would be within our means."
Mr. Warschauer's reply of 14th June gave details as to his education and activities. (see curriculum vitae) He further enclosed a reference from the "JUEDISCHE GEMEINDE" "COMMUNAL ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL EUROPEAN JEWS".  im Shangahi and Copy of a letter written by Chaplain A.I. Pine, Major Shangai Base.

On the 5th  June Mr. A. Masel, President of the Victorian Jewish Advisory Board was approached by letter, in order to find out if the Hobart Hebrew Congregation could count on any assistance from the Mainland Congregations, in case a Rabbi as appointed to the congregation.

On the 17th July a further telegram was received from Mr. W. reading:-

" PRAY GET PERMIT URGENTLY REGARDLESS
" FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENT PLEASE CABLE ANSWER "

In the light of this letter telegram an application for a Landing Permit for Mr. and Mrs. W. was lodged and subsequently granted (Permit No. 45068, dated 19th Sept. 1946.)

Mr. & Mrs. W. managed to obtain a passage on the steamer HWALIEN which arrived recently in Sydney, and are anxious to proceed to Hobart.

A lively debate followed this report, and a resolution was adopted saying:-

ENGAGEMENT
" THIS CONGREGATION IS PREPARED TO ENGAGE Mr. WARSE
" FOR AN UNSPECIFIED PERIOD, SUBJECT TO CONDITIONS
" TO BE ARRANGED LATER".

Moved by Mr. H.J. Jacob
seconded by Mr. L. Hayes

The only opposing view came from Mr. R. Chase on the grounds that there are not sufficient funds to support a minister, and that the Congregation was too small.

FINANCES
In order to finance the engagement of a minister the following motion was brought in by Mr. G. Benjamin and seconded by Mr. F. Newman:-

"SUBJECT TO THE ENGAGEMENT OF A MINISTER THE
"SUBSCRIPTION FOR 1946/7 BE RAISED TO £5-5-0 ANNUALLY
BUT ANY MEMBER WHO FEEL THIS AMOUNT TO BE A HARDSHIP
