At a General Meeting of the Members of the Congregation held at the house of Mr I Friedman Argyle Street on Monday Evening the 5th June 1843 and convened by the President for the purpose of taking into consideration the Tenders received for the Erection of a Synagogue / opened by the Building Committee, / and for other business.

The President, Louis Nathan Esqre in the Chair

It was Resolved on the motion of Mr Isaac Solomon seconded by Mr Philip Levy that Mr P Moss be requested to act as Honorary Secretary to the Congregation.
Resolved on the motion of Mr Samuel Moses seconded by Mr Philip Levy Senr that the Tender of Messrs Kirk and Fisher for the erection of a Synagogue for the sum of Seven Hundred and Seventeen pounds be accepted.

The List of Subscriptions to the Synagogue having been read out, it was –
Resolved on the motion of Mr David Heckscher Seconded by Mr Samuel Moses that all Subscriptions to the Synagogue of ten shillings one pound or under be paid in Cash and all sums above one pound to be paid by the parties subscribing by a promissory note to the Treasurer of Three months date.

The President having stated that he had applied to the Lieutenant Governor for pecuniary aid towards the expense of building a Synagogue but unsuccessfully, the answer for the Colonial Secretary in reply to the
letter forwarded was then read –

The President then laid before the meeting a letter received from the Secretary of the Great Synagogue London handing copy of resolutions passed at a meeting of the Committee

16 Nov 5603/1842 in reference to the vacant office of Chief Rabbi as Spiritual Guide and Director of all the Jews of the British Empire, it was

Resolved on the motion of Mr Isaac Friedman seconded by Mr D Heckscher that this meeting fully concur in opinion with the Committee of the Great Synagogue in London
“That it is highly important and expedient that the vacant office of Chief Rabbi should be filled up at as early a period as may be possible.”

and that the Secretary of this Congregation be requested to communicate the Resolution to the Secretary in London as early as possible.
Resolved on the motion of Mr Isaac Solomon Seconded by Mr Solm Meyers that a מטהר House be created at the Burying Ground. Messrs David Moses and Samuel Moses having previously expressed their intention of presenting the sum of Ten Pounds towards the building and that the remaining sum necessary for its completion be raised by voluntary contributions and further that it be Resolved that Messrs David Moses, Philip Levy Junr Samuel Moses and Isaac Friedman be elected a Committee to carry the first resolution into effect in regard to the erection of the house.

Resolved on the motion of Mr David Heckscher seconded by Mr David Moses that the thanks of the Congregation be given to Mr Robert Hart for his able and zealous performance of the duties of Honorary Secretary.

The President having vacated the Chair and Mr D Heckscher having been called upon to fill the same.

It was resolved on the motion of Mr P Levy Junr seconded by Mr H Nathan that the thanks of the meeting are especially due to the President Louis Nathan Esqre for his unremitting care and attention to thexx on behalf of the Congregation and for his able conduct in the Chair.
