Committee Meeting Tuesday 25 Decr 1849 The President in the ChairPresent
Messrs Sl Levy Senr, Philip Levy, Judah Solomon, Abrm Rheuben.
Mr. Henry Jones reported that the Synagogue had been broken open on the night of Sunday the 17th instant and that the plated handles of a Roll of the Law had been broken off and removed and that also two silk טל'ת'ם and other articles had been stolen and that the President had offered a reward of Twenty pounds for the detection of the offenders.
In consequence of the desecration of the ספר the President ordered a public fast to be held on Thursday the 27th inst.
A new Roll of the Law having been received from Louis Nathan Esq. from London, it was ordered that it be presented on Sunday the 30th instant by the President’s desire, the Service to commence at 5 o’clock in the afternoon.
The Revd M. Cohen then having stated to the Meeting the arrangements that had been made for the proper reception of the ספר תורה it was agreed that they be carried into effect.
It was resolved that the two prayers for Blessing the donor of the Roll of the Law and his Lady, written in Hebrew and English by the Honorary Secretary Mr. Phineas Moss be read on the occasion of the presentation by the Service Reader Mr. Henry Jones.
