A Special General meeting was held in the Synagogue Chambers on Sunday 17th April 1910/5670.


Present: Mr. S Benjamin, President, in the Chair, Isaac Benjamin, B Harris, J Glasser. NH Levi , M Epstein, D Nathan, J Levi (visitor) George Levi and R Benjamin.

Business: This meeting was called to consider an engagement with Mr I Morris of Newcastle.

The President read a number of testimonials presented by the rec’d gentleman from Rev Cohen (Minister of the Sydney Congregation) and others testifying to his qualifications as a Reader, Shochet, Mohel and Teacher.

Proposed by Mr. D Nathan and Mr. Geo Levi that the Rev I Morris not be appointed to this Congregation and that the matter be deferred until a reply has been received from the Chief Rabbi of London to the letter addressed to him on the subject of the Minister. Moved as an amendment by Mr. NH Levi, seconded by Mr. J Levy that the Reverend Mr Morris be engaged in accordance with the terms of agreement read by the President. The amendment was passed and carried: Nine(9) for Two(2) against. Proposed by Mr S Benjamin seconded by Mr. M Epstein that ten pounds £10 be allowed out of the funds of the Congregation to the Rev Mr. Morris toward his expenses coming to Hobart, Carried.

Proposed by Mr S Benjamin, seconded by Mr. J Levy that an insurance of £250 be effected on the life of Rev Mr. Morris upon his arrival carried. Proposal by Mr. J Levy seconded by Mr. J Glasser that all offerings in hand and all further offerings for the Philanthropic Society be applied towards payment of the Minister’s salary if found necessary at the discretion of the President.
