Special General Meeting held in the Synagogue Chambers Sunday 19th June 1910/5670

Present: Mssrs. S Benjamin, President in the chair, Rev. I Morris, J Benjamin, NH Levi. J Glasser, B Harris, D Nathan , J Levi, M Epstein, George Levi, N Levy and R Benjamin.

Business: This meeting was called to consider the question of reading the Law in the cycle of three years.

The minutes of the previous meetings were read and confirmed. The Rev I Morris is referring to the proposal that the Law be read in a three year cycle, said it was not at all a new idea as the same thing has been done hundreds of years ago in Jerusalem and Babylon and the practice in no way interferes with Jewish tradition. Mr. J. Benjamin inquired how the adoption of the suggestion could affect Simchas Torah Service to which Rev Mr. Morris replied that that difficulty could be easily overcome. Proposed by Mr J. Benjamin, seconded by Mr. Geo Levy that in preference to adopting the said proposal that the school be open for Sabbath Services at 9:30 am instead of 10 am as hitherto and that the Scroll be taken from the Ark and the Torah read at 10 am sharp as usual.

Mr D Nathan moved an amendment which was seconded by Mr. J Levy (proforma) that the reading of the Law be reduced in its portions and be extended over a period of three years. This amendment was lost and the resolution put and carried unanimously

The President announced that he was arranging the Life Insurance of the Rev. Mr. Morris who had been under medical examination the results of which are not yet known. Proposed by Mr. S Benjamin and Mr. J Glasser that the life policy of Mr. Morris when issued be transferred to the President and Mr. NH Levi to be held in trust. Carried.

A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
