Annual General Meeting of the Hobart Hebrew Cong held at the Synagogue Chambers on Sunday, May 8th, 1921

Present
Mr B. Harris (chair), Mr J. Glasser (Vice), Messrs J. Levy, D. Mendes, J. Benjamin, J K Edwards, M. Davis, P. Glasser, and the Hon Sec Nat Edwards


The Hon Sec reported that Mr G. Levy of Hobart and Mr M. Joseph of Launceston had appointed him to act as their proxies to represent them at the General Meeting to be held this day.

The minutes of the last General Meeting were read and confirmed.

The Hon Sec having read the annual balance sheet for the year ending May 1st, 1921, it was proposed by him and seconded by Mr J. Benjamin that the same be adopted and confirmed. Carried unanimously----

Proposed by the Hon Sec, seconded by Mr J. Levy that the Bye Law be altered so as to read that the governing body consist of President, Vice President, Treasurer, Hon Sec and two members of the congregation to act as committee men. Carried unanimously.

Proposed by Mr J. Benjamin and seconded by Mr M. Davis that the whole of the returning members be re-elected together with Mr D. Mendes as the extra member of the committee. Carried unanimously.

It was reported by the Hon Sec that a special general meeting of the members of the Hobart Hebrew Cong was held at the Masonic Hall, Hobart, on Monday, the second day of May, 1921 at which an illuminated address together with a purse of sovereigns was presented to the Rev I. Morris upon him relinquishing the position of minister prior to him accepting the duties of Minister of the Newcastle (NSW) congregation, also an address by the children of the Hebrew School.

Proposed by Mr J. Levy, seconded by Mr D. Mendes and carried unanimously that Mr B. Harris be appointed Hon Leader to the Hobart Hebrew Congregation.

Proposed by Mr J. Levy, seconded by Mr J. Glasser and carried unanimously that the Hon Sec be authorized to appeal for funds to be forwarded to the Chief Rabbi of England on behalf of the Jewish War Memorial Fund which is being raised by that gentleman.

The following amounts were promised at the meeting which the Hon Sec was authorized to collect and forward to the Chief Rabbi, the full amount to be divided over five years and the total amount to be sent each year to the Sec of the Fund upon receipt of application from the Sec of the Fund.
Hobart Hebrew Cong. Five pounds five shilling (Five guineas), Mr J. Glasser Five pounds five shillings (Five guineas), Mr G. Levy One pound, two shillings, Mr B. Harris Two pounds two shillings (Two guineas), Mr D. Mendes(z) Two pounds two shillings (Two guineas), Mr J. Benjamin Twenty-one shillings, Mr R. Benjamin Twenty-one shillings, Mr Aaronfeld Twenty-one shillings, P. Glasser Twenty-one shillings, Mr Forbes Twenty shillings, J. Levy Forty-two shillings, S. Lewis Ten shillings and sixpence, S. Glasser Ten shillings and sixpence.

Proposed by J. Benjamin and seconded by IJ Levy and carried unanimously ‘That the matter of a successor to the Rev I. Morris be referred to the executive for further consideration and that they call a special general meeting to deal with same.’

A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the chairman for presiding.
