Temple House

Corner of Liverpool and Argyle Street, Hobart.

Temple House is a Georgian Mansion built by brothers Judah and Joseph Solomon in the 1820s as a business and residence. In 1841 Judah took complete ownership of Temple House. Services were held here, hence the name. In 1843, Judah Solomon donated his garden for the synagogue.

Upon Judah's death in 1856, his son Isaac Solomon owned the mansion. Later another son of Judah, Joseph Solomon took ownership and residence. Joseph's nephew Samuel Benjamin inherited the mansion when Joseph died.

It was later sold to the Y.M.C.A. in 1921. The Tasmanian Government purchased the property in 1964, and in the early 90's, restored the building to resemble the original Georgian mansion. The Tasmanian Police now occupy the building.
